Do you want to have a freedom and flexibility to choose where you will spend each night during your stay in Iceland or maybe you’re planning to hike in the highlands?
I know it is kind of heavy and complex to bring all the gear from abroad, especially if you travel on a small budget.
To make things easier, I have listed outdoor equipment gear rental places and stores where you could rent or buy essential equipment for your camping or hiking trip around Iceland.
Rental equipment options
Camping industry in Iceland started to boom only recently, thus it is no surprise that there are not too many outdoor rental companies that provide this service, but don’t worry the ones that do, will definitely fulfil your needs.
It is not only a camping rental company but also an outdoor store where you can purchase new items. They rent tents, sleeping bags, mats, GPS, glacier walking tools and many other practical and useful things. For the best rental deals, check their camping and hiking kits.
Some of the brands that they rent and sell are: Husky, Exped, Lowa, Sherpa, Cumulus, Thermowave and many other.
24/7 pick-up and drop-off on request.
Opening hours: Mon/Fri 10:00-19:00, Sat/Sun 11:00-17:00
Location: Fiskislóð 31
Iceland Equipment Rental
In this store you can rent tents, sleeping bags, cooking equipment, WIFI, GoPro, coolers and many other things. Rental items are from various brands e.g.: The North Face, Vango, Campingaz, Primus, Coleman and Garmin.
They do offer 24/7 pick-up and drop-off. I do recommend to check their location on Google Street view, because it is rather difficult to find it.
Opening hours: 9:00 – 17:00 (1 May – 1 October, Off-season: upon arrangement)
Location: Barónsstígur 5
Fjallakofinn is quite high-end outdoor store that also offers some rental options. For example camping kits up to 6 people, backpacks, child carriers and more.
The only downside with rental is that even though one of their stores is located in downtown area, you have to pick up the gear 11km away from it. Also it is not possible to rent during the weekend.
Some of the brands they sell: Marmot, Scarpa, Jetboil, Black Diamond and many other.
Opening hours: Mon/Fri 10:00-18:00, Sat 10:00 – 17:00, Sun 12:00 – 18:00
Location: Hverfisgata 82
Rent a Tent
Offers slightly smaller selection of items, mainly for the regular camping.
If you’re visiting Iceland because of some outdoor festival, they provide pre-pitched tent service. Which means that you let them know what festival are you attending to and when you arrive to the festival location you will find the tent pitched-up for you with all other rented gear inside of it.
Opening hours: 24/7 pick-up and drop-off service.
Location: Smiðjuvegi 6, rauð gata
The list below includes stores that only offer camping equipment that is for sale. Some of them are located in walking distance of downtown, others you´ll need to drive to.
