Inside the Volcano

Unfortunately or more like – fortunately at the time of writing this post there are no ongoing eruptions in Iceland. But there is an inactive dormant volcano located just 30 min. that you can go inside of it!

If you are not afraid of heights and do not have claustrophobia, then this once in a life time experience will be long time remembered.

After a 45 min. hike you will arrive at the volcano where a specially designed elevator will take you 120 meters (380 feet) down to the bottom of the crater.inside the volcano tour in icelandWhat to bring: good shoes (hiking boots), warm outdoor clothing and good spirit.

If you want to catch two birds in one shot, this 11-hour long tour could be a day well spent. It covers both lava and ice tunnels. While Viðgelmir lava cave was formed approx. 1100 years ago, ice cave is a recent men made construction built in 2010 on the top of Langjökull glacier.

In order to reach the ice cave, you will be riding specially-modified glacier vehicle that will take you all the way to the top where the entrance of the cave is located.

This tour is family friendly and fits well for kids.

Midnight Sun Snowmobile Experience

This tour starts 19:00 o´clock in the evening, right before it gets dark. Just kidding! Because of the midnight sun you will have a sunlight all night long.

Before heading to the glacier you will stop at the Gullfoss waterfall’s cafeteria to enjoy a light refreshment which is included in the price. If you’re a quick chewer, you will have some extra time to run over to the waterfall to take some photos.

The drive will continue trough the highland road until you reach the base camp located on the glacier, where you will be provided with all essential gear. After a instruction on how to use a snowmobile 1 hour journey will begin!

River rafting at Gullfoss canyon

An amazing, adrenaline driven journey through the ice cold Hvitá river which has it’s origin in Langjökull glacier. But don’t worry as long as you don’t fall out of the boat you won’t need to experience the coldness. Even if you do,  you will be quickly rescued by other people on the boat.

This tour is all about teamwork so it fits very well for a group of friends traveling together.river rafting in iceland tourWhat to bring: Good mood.

Helicopter tour

If you have a short stop over or just don’t want to spend a long day on a bus, helicopter tour is a good way to experience Iceland’s beauty in a nutshell.

My personal recommendations are:

Fire & Ice – 110-140min. tour, that will give a good overview of beautiful locations such as Glymur Waterfall and Þingvellir National Park. Also two landings – on the glacier and a geothermal area.

Diamond Circle in the North – If you want to see something different from what most of the sightseeing tours in Iceland offers, then this tour is definitely for you. It is 6.5h long, covers 10 different locations. Some of the locations even hardly accessible by any other transportation than a 4×4 and a helicopter.

Reykjavik Summit – Slightly cheaper and shorter (30-45 min.) tour which covers Reykjavik and its surroundings. If you want, for an extra fee you can add a 15 min. landing on nearby mountain.

What to bring: Just dress according to the weather.

Highlights: Amazing birds-eye experience.

Winter Ice Caves at Skaftafell, Vatnajökull National Park

If your plan is to visit Iceland in the winter time,  exploring blue ice cave is the definitely must thing to do. It is located at Skaftafell which is 4 hours away from Reykjavik.

Since it doesn’t include a pick up from Reykjavik it is best to spend the night before in its surroundings. This tour fits perfectly if you are planning to visit South Coast and Glacier Lagoon.

On the first day you could cover South Coast (Seljalandsfoss, Skógarfóss, Reynisfjara and Reynisfjara black sand beach).

Start second day with ice caving tour and then drive 45min. to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon.
